On Saturday, Oct. 4, 2008 approximately 75 volunteers joined together to plant lilacs and trees along the North and South sides of Hwy 55 between Winnetka and General Mills Blvd/Boone Ave. They also planted golden wildflowers in the medians of Golden Valley.

All this was the brainchild of Golden Valley resident Dwight Townes. He is a member of Golden Valley's Envision Connection Project, Bridge Builders, a community organization that gives individuals and groups a way to connect with others who share similar interests, and to mobilize them to engage in beneficiary projects. Townes initiated the partnership between Golden Valley and MnDOT to bring the project to fruition.

The City of Golden Valley will water and maintain the lilacs (thanks, Golden Valley!) Many companies contributed to the effort, including the GV Friends and Neighbors, MN/DOT, Brookview Golf Course, GV Public Works, MA Mortensen, S & S Tree Specialists, Byerly’s, General Mills, Suzanne & Eda Kelley, Blair & Linda Tremere, Bruce Peterson, Henn. Co. Master Gardeners, Noodles and Company, Caribou Coffee and Mansfield Tanick & Cohen Law Firm. Thanks and congratulations to everyone!

Now, if only we could get Golden Valley  to restore Blazer Park, one of the original Lilac Way Parks.

Blazer Park, also known as Golden Valley Parking Area, is a 3-acre site located on the west side of Highway 100 immediately southwest of the cloverleaf intersection of Highway 55 in Golden Valley.

It used to have a stone entrance sign, flagpole, three sets of stone picnic tables, a stone fireplace and a council ring - all built by FDR’s WPA in 1939.

Please be inspired by SLP’s restoration of Roadside Park, and start your own Blazer Park Committee!
